Installation
Suggestions:
This
installation overview provides suggestions for handling and
installing Acoustiblok®
Sound Isolation Material. Acoustiblok is a heavy, high-density
product (1lb/Ft2), so when preparing for the installation, always
schedule at least two installers for efficiency and safety.
All
tools (except, common hand tools) and materials required for a
professional Acoustiblok sound installation are available from
Acoustiblok, Inc. See our "Installation Accessories &
Hardware Price List" for more details. Use the Acoustiblok RD350
Material Roll Dispenser or similar “A-Frame” type roller stand
for safety and ease of handling.
Acoustiblok
Sound Isolation Material should always, if possible, be installed on
the same side of the assembly as the source of sound or noise. This
will decrease the amount of acoustical energy that may be converted
into mechanical noise.
It
is essential that the treated room be sealed as airtight as possible
using Acoustiblok Acoustical Sound Sealant, Acoustigrip Tape, and
Acoustiputty sealant pads. The effectiveness of your Acoustiblok
sound treatment will be jeopardized if these steps are not taken.
Always
install the Acoustiblok Sound Isolation Material with the logo and
U.L. printing visible. This allows for quick inspection and sign off
from building inspectors and assurance to your clients that they have
received an actual Acoustiblok sound reduction treatment, not an
inferior, non U.L. rated and acoustically untested product
substitution.
For
all floor installations it is important to maintain isolation of the
underlayments and floor finish with all adjacent surfaces. Always
leave a 1/8”-3/8” perimeter gap between the Acoustiwool,
Acoustiblok, substrates and flooring from all adjacent wall surfaces.
Fill these gaps with Acoustiblok Acoustical Sound Sealant.
Verify
that the underlayments and substrates provide the structural
requirements of the finished floor.
Confirm
the compatability of any adhesives, thinset or other products used
with the Acoustiblok products.
Wood
Joist Floor Install
Before
starting the installation, ascertain which way the Acoustiblok1660
3mm material needs to run i.e.: either length or width ways of the
area to be installed, and cut runs of material accordingly.
Acoustiblok
is most effective when it can be applied over the top of the joists
before the subfloor is installed, (for additional reduction, apply on
the bottom of the truss as well).
Ensure
the first run of Acoustiblok1660 3mm material is laid square to the
starting wall, (remember logo facing upwards), so that the
installation will follow this line. Spot glue in place if necessary.
Use
171 Fast Cure Mastic and run an approximate 4” 6” bead along each
joist. Lay the material over the joists securing one end with a
minimal number of staples or tape. It need not be tight. Do not worry
that it will sag slightly, secure at the other end. Do not overlap
the Acoustiblok, move on to the next run.
Continue
laying each run of Acoustiblok in the same way until the area to be
treated has been completely covered.
Wipe
clean and seal the seams between runs of Acoustiblok with Acoustigrip
tape and check to ensure there are no gaps or holes left in the
installation area.
Use
171 Fast Cure Mastic to glue the sub floor to Acoustiblok. If you use
nails, use the absolute minimum number required, as nails will act as
microphones and mechanically pass sound into the joists.
If
the installation allows, leave a space between the subfloor and
adjacent walls 3.5mm to 9.5mm) and fill this gap with Acoustiblok
Acoustical Sound Sealant. This de-coupling does make a difference.
Not doing this allows sound from the floor to travel into the wall
structure and down into the other rooms.
Pay
particular attention to the perimeter edge of the room to ensure a
flat and even finish. If the Acoustiblok is not lying flat to the
floor, allow it to sit overnight at ambient room temperature to allow
settlement.
In
between each joist one 3.5mm clear hole should be drilled in the
Acoustiblok to act as a water warning should the floor be flooded at
some future date.
